Frequently asked questions about inflation and krone value

What is inflation?

Inflation means that the price level of goods and services rises, so that money loses some of its value. You need more money to buy the same goods today than you did e.g. 10 years ago. The target is a stable inflation of approx. 2% over time.

How is the krone value calculated?

The krone value is calculated using a Consumer Price Index (CPI) prepared by Statistics Norway. They fill up a "shopping basket" with typical goods Norwegians buy, and measure the price of the basket every year. The formula to find out what an amount corresponds to is: (New CPI / Old CPI) x Amount.
